Baksa

Baksa district is a district of Assam state with its administrative headquarters located at Mushalpur city. The district was formed by combining Nalbari, Barpeta, Kamrup and small parts of Darrang district. Baksa was declared as a separate district on June 1, 2004. 


There is a very popular belief among the people that originally the word 'Baksa' is pronounced as 'Bangsa' which means a farmhouse and a corridor because at that time Bhutanese kings and subjects used it for trade and access to the plains Were. While according to Bodo source the name of this place is derived from a type of rice grain which is known as "Bagsa" in this region.


Area

The geographical area of the district is 2,457 square km. It is bounded by Bhutan on the north, Udalguri district on the east, Barpeta, Nalbari and Kamrup districts on the south and Chirang district on the west. The district is divided into 6 revenue divisions, namely Baska, Baganpar, Barama, Jalah, Tamulpur and Goreshwar. It consists of 13 sub-districts, 2 towns and 690 villages.

Population

According to 2011 census, the population of the district is 9,50,075. The sex ratio in the district is 974 females per 1000 males. The administrative languages in the district are Assamese and English.

Economy

The economy of the district mainly depends on the agricultural sector. More than half of the population of the district is engaged in agriculture to earn their livelihood. The main agricultural products in the district are rice, wheat, paddy, pulses etc. Despite many advanced agricultural schemes being launched by the government, the farmers here are still stuck to old agricultural techniques. Every year a large part of the revenue coming from agricultural products in the district helps its economy to a great extent.


Education

The literacy rate of the district is 69.25%. The district is known for its reputed educational institutions. It provides an excellent platform for higher education. B.B. Kishan College, Barama College, Dhamdhama Junior College, Goreshwar College, Mushalpur College, Salbari Junior College, St. John's H.S. School, Tamulpur College, etc. are some of the best educational institutions in the district.

Attraction

The district has many centers of attraction which attract many travelers coming from different parts of the country and the world. Most of the Mansa Tiger Reserve is included within the limits of Baksa district. Manas National Park and Project Tiger are both located in the western part of the district in the foothills of Bhutan. Manas Saushi Khongkhor, an eco-tourism destination is located in the central part of Baksa district. 


The place is blessed with captivating natural scenery, which attracts a large number of picnic lovers in the month of December and January every year. Moinapukhuri, located in the northern part of Mushalpur in Baksa district, is the only trekking spot. Bogamati is a very wonderful place which is completely blessed by nature. This is an ideal place for nature lovers.

How to reach Baksa

We can easily reach Buxa by air, rail and road. The nearest airport to Baksa is in Guwahati called Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, and it is about 130 km from Baksa. The nearest railway station is in Nalbari district, at a distance of about 35 km from Baksa. There are direct bus services to Mushalpur and Tumulpur from Adabari Bus Terminal in Guwahati. From Adabari, small car services are also available to different parts of Baksa.
