Karnal

Karnal is an agricultural and industrial district in the north-central part of Haryana. Karnal is one of the historical districts of Haryana. It is also known as the city of 'Danveer Karna'. It is said that it was founded by King Karna. The name Karnal comes from Karnalaya, where Aalaya means abode. However, present day Karnal presents the vision of lush green fields, Basmati, industrial landscape, educated service class and a serene and peaceful city.

 


Karnal district is one of the 22 districts of Haryana, a state in northern India that constitutes the National Capital Region (NCR) of the country. Karnal city is a part of the National Capital Region (NCR) and is the administrative headquarters of the district. Many prominent personalities from various fields belong to the district. Kalpana Chawla and current Chief Minister of Haryana Manohar Lal Khattar ji are some of the famous personalities of the district. Karnal emerged as a separate district on the map of Haryana state on January 23, 1973.

Area

The district is spread over an area of 2,520 square kilometres. From administrative point of view, this district comes under Rohtak division. The district is divided into 4 sub-divisions, 5 tehsils, 8 blocks, 382 gram panchayats and 435 villages. Karnal, Indri, Nilokheri, Gharaunda and Assandh are tehsils of the district. Karnal district shares its borders with the districts of Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Panipat as well as the state of Uttar Pradesh.

Population


This district is one of the most densely populated districts of the state. According to 2011 census, population of Karnal district is 15,05,324. Karnal district has a sex ratio of 996 females for every 1,000 males. Hindi is the first major language of the district.

Economically the district is dependent on agriculture. Karnal is also called the rice bowl of India. Many small and big industries are established in the district.

Education

The district has many educational institutions including many excellent schools and colleges. The literacy rate of the district is 74.73%. National Dairy Research Institute, Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College, Maharana Pratap Horticultural University, Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay University of Health Sciences etc. are some of the best educational institutions in the district.


 

Attraction

There are many famous historical and religious places to visit here. Qalandar Shah's Tomb, Sita Mai Temple, Meeran Sahib's Tomb, Gurdwara Manji Sahib, Gondar, Parasir Tank Bahlolpur, Anjanthali Anjana Temple, Dargah Noori etc. are some of the best attractions of the district. Karnal experiences extreme summers while winters are extremely cold. Winter is the best time to visit Karnal due to the hospitable and pleasant weather.

How to reach


Karnal is located on National Highway 44, with good connectivity to nearby major cities like Delhi and Chandigarh. Karnal is also well connected by railways. Karnal Junction is located on the Delhi-Kalka line and many major trains stop at this station. The district headquarters also has a small airport known as Karnal Airport. The nearest airport is Indira Gandhi International Airport which is at a distance of 137 kilometers from here.
