Karbi Anglong

Karbi Anglong district is a district in the state of Assam with its headquarter located in Diphu town. The name of the district is derived from two words namely Karbi and Anglong. Karbi is a very famous tribe which is commonly found in most of the areas of Assam state.

On the other hand, Anglong is a Karbi word which means hills. Both the words Karbi Anglong together mean the hills of the Karbi people. Karbi Anglong came into existence as a completely separate district on the map of Assam on 14th October 1976.

Area

Spread over 10,434 sq km, the district is bordered by Golaghat, Morigaon, Nagaon districts as well as Meghalaya and Nagaland. The district is divided into 3 sub-divisions namely Diphu, Bokajan and Hamren. Apart from this, the district consists of 7 towns and 2,921 villages.

According to the 2011 census, the population of the district is 9,56,313. The sex ratio in the district is 951 females per 1000 males. The major languages ​​of the district are Karbi, Bengali and Hindi.

Economy

The economy of the district is mainly dependent on agriculture. More than half of its population is engaged in agriculture to earn their livelihood. A variety of agricultural crops are cultivated in the district, paddy being the main one. The unique arts and crafts here are famous not only in Assam but also in various parts of India.

The literacy rate of the district is 69.25%. The district is known to be the abode of many prestigious educational institutions. It provides an ideal platform for higher education. Diphu Government College, Diphu Law College, Don Bosco Junior College, Eastern Karbi Anglong College, Ruksan College, Thong Nokbe College, Aturkimi Academy, Calvary Home Academy, D.A.V. Higher Secondary School, Don Bosco School, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Kendriya Vidyalaya etc. are the best educational institutes of the district.

Attractions

The district has many centers of attraction that attract many travelers coming from different parts of the country and the world. Karbi Anglong, one of the hill districts of Assam, has many enchanting natural scenes. 

Kakochang Waterfall

Diphu, a small but very attractive town is situated on a hill in the district. Silbheta, an ideal place for picnic lovers, is located at a distance of 37 km from Diphu. Akashganga, a divine stream of water that flows down from a high hill, is located at a distance of 65 km from Diphu. 

Matipung Park Diphu

Apart from this, there is also an ancient great Shiva temple there. Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary in the district is known for Hallock Gibbon and Golden Langur. It also has a hot water spring and it is believed that the water of the waterfall has the power to cure skin diseases. 

Bhelughat Waterfall

Dikrut Falls, a wonderful waterfall is located in the lap of the mountain in the district. Kanthilangso Falls, another wonderful waterfall is located about 12 km away. The climate of the district remains pleasant throughout the year. Most of its rainfall occurs during the monsoon season. The best time to visit the district is from October to December and February to April.

How to Reach

The district is well connected to other districts by various routes. In the north it is covered by NH-36 and in the east by NH-39. Diphu Railway Station is the main railway station of the district. The nearest airport is at Dimapur which is at a distance of 61.2 km from Diphu.
