West Bengal
West Bengal is a state located in the eastern part of India. In its neighborhood are Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan, Assam, Bangladesh, Odisha, Jharkhand and Bihar. Its capital is Kolkata. There are 23 districts in this state. The main language here is Bengali.
Islamic rule over Bengal began in the 13th century and developed into a prosperous center of trade and industry under the Mughal rule in the 13th century. By the end of the 15th century, European traders had arrived here and by the end of the 18th century, this area had come under the control of the British East India Company. The British Empire in India originated from here. India became independent in 1947 and with it Bengal was divided into Muslim-dominated East Bengal (which later became Bangladesh) and Hindu-dominated West Bengal (Indian Bengal).
This state is spread over an area of 88,853 sq km in the eastern part of India. It is bounded by Sikkim in the north, Assam in the north-east, Bangladesh in the east, Bay of Bengal and Orissa in the south, and Bihar and Jharkhand in the west.
